- They keep energy levels steady and won't leave my gut in knots.
Top Tips
Keep it light on race dayâeasy-to-digest, high-sugar snacks like bananas keep me fueled up without the insulin rollercoaster. Skip the heavy stuff and load up on carbs instead.
Chapter 5 - Master Your Braking â The First Step In Becoming A Great Kart Driver
- Braking is 90% of the race craft
Lock Up Braking
- Slamming on the brakes so hard the rear tire almost locks up, creating a chirping sound.
- Predictable and only effective for corners with heavy braking.
Stable Braking
- Brakes engage without locking, and tires stay gripped.
- Finding maximum braking without locking is tough, and maintaining consistent deceleration is harder.
- Ideal for both light and heavy braking corners.
Conquering Mini Lock Up
- Learning how to lock and unlock the rear tires for better control.
- A common mistake is not locking the brake, but more often, drivers fail to release it once itâs locked.
How To Perform Mini Lock Up
- Drive in a straight line at half the maximum speed, release the throttle, and brake until the rear tires briefly lock.
- Release the brake completely so the tires regain grip.
- Practice regularly to get comfortable with how the kart responds and to feel at ease.
- The goal is to reprogram my mind to understand that locking the brakes is safe as long as you can control it by releasing them.
- Be ready to brake harder to achieve lock-up as the tires warm up and grip more.
Step By Step Locking Up Braking For A Corner
- Choose a tight corner with a fast approach.
- Find a reference point, like a dark patch on the track, to mark your regular braking zone.
- Brake slightly earlier than the usual point, giving extra space between the kart and the track edge.
- Prepare to brake hard, but keep your body stableâdon't lean forward, as it reduces rear grip.
- At your early braking point, quickly lift off the throttle and hit the brake pedal hard enough to lock the rear tires. Trust that if the kart slides too much, just release the brake to regain control.
- Be ready for the tires to lock and release the brake just enough to prevent full lock-up. You'll hear a squeaking sound at this point.
- Embrace the sideways motion; a slight slide before the turn is fine. The harder you press the brake, the more sideways the kart will go.
- Avoid abruptly releasing all brake pressure. Letting off too quickly can cause the kart to snap due to the tires regaining grip. Keep steady brake pressure and modulate the pedal for smoother control.
- Gradually release the brake pressure as you exit the braking zone. Slowly easing off while steering reduces the risk of spinning.
How to Fix Difficulties During Lockup
- Lifting Off the Throttle Too Soon.
⢠If you stop accelerating too early before braking, the weight shifts away from the rear tires.
⢠This reduces grip at the back, making the kart more likely to slide. - Not Braking Hard Enough
⢠Be ready to press the brake pedal quickly and firmly. Itâs important to apply strong braking at the start.
⢠You shouldnât increase pressure as you get closer to the corner.
⢠If you have to press harder in the middle of the corner, it means you didnât brake hard enough at the start.
⢠Just before reaching the apex (the tightest part of the turn), you should start easing off the brake. - Locking Up the Brakes
⢠Lock-up happens when you press the brake pedal too hard and fast. This makes the tires stop spinning and can cause me to lose control. - Spinning While Braking
⢠If you keep braking too hard while turning into a corner, the kart can spin out.
⢠You should brake hard before the turn, then smoothly ease off as you steer into the corner.
Step by Step Trail Braking
Trail braking is braking late and overlapping the braking with beginning of turn in.
- Tires can handle both braking and slight cornering force.
- Brake 2 meters later, continue braking after turn-in, and ease off near the apex.
- Brake hard at a later point, then gradually release.
- Stay on the brake about 70% into the turn and control slides.
- Release brake pressure gradually as side grip increases.
- Keep easing off the brake to maximize cornering grip.
Stable Braking If You Don't Like Locking.
- You must brake immediately with the right pressure; otherwise, you canât make the turn.
- The benefit is better kart control if you can brake at the limit.
Braking Super Deep To Keep The Cart On Its Nose.
- Braking shifts weight forward, increasing front tire grip through the apex.
- It also lifts the inside rear tire, making the kart more responsive.
- Mastering this technique leads to a faster exit.
How To Keep The Kart Pitched All The Way Throught The Apex
- Brake hard and late, like trail braking.
- Gradually release brake pressure, as in trail braking.
- Keep a small amount of brake pressure as you release.
- Hold this small brake pressure until the apex.
- Fully release the brake at the apex.
- Be ready to apply power immediately after releasing the brake.
- If Iâm too fast, let the kart coast before applying power.
- Imagine the brake pad just brushing the disc without causing heavy deceleration.
- Combining this technique with a late apex helps me get on the power earlier.
Beware Using The Front Tire For Brakes And Killing My Tires.
- Save the tires for the final race.
- Caring for the front tires means being very precise.
- Taking a corner too fast can change the tire angle, creating a better line and slightly braking the kart, but since front tires are thinner than the rears, they overheat quickly and wear out faster.
Super Deep Braking Technique Will Help To Conserve My Front Tire
- Braking too softly forces the front tires to work harder with extra steering angle.
- Braking too late makes the front tires struggle to turn.
- Releasing the brake too early requires extra steering to reach the apex.
Conserving The Front Tire
- Use minimal steering.
- Donât use steering to add extra angle while braking.
Power Braking
- For slight corners that require lifting off,
- Instead of lifting, brake while accelerating.
- Lifting off makes the kart unpredictable, unloading the rear tires, causing it to squirm and slide.
Learning Power Braking And Use it wisely.
- On the straight, stay flat on the gas and gently press the brake to slow the kart slightly.
- Practice this until you feel comfortable with how much you can slow down the kart.
- Choose a corner where you would normally lift, but instead of fully lifting, lift slightly and brake at the same time.
- Gradually challenge myself to stop lifting and rely only on braking.
- Take it step by step and abandon the method if it doesnât feel right.
Top Tips
Build confidence step by step. Select the braking style that works best for me. Consistently practice lock-ups and slides to understand the kartâs limits.
Chapter 6 - Steering Styles And Body Posture
Minimum Steering Inputs Are Always Essential
- The left and right wheels turn at different angles, causing one tire to work harder during sharp turns.
- Every extra steering angle creates drag and destabilizes the kart.
How To Feel For Understeer
- The kart canât fully respond to excessive steering angle.
- Turning more to compensate moves the kart outside its optimal performance window.
How To Feel For Oversteer
- When the rear tire exceeds its grip limit, steering becomes light, and the kart slides.
- Avoid over-correcting the slide too violently.
- Even a small steering input can cause oversteer, so be mindful of how little is needed to trigger it.
Where To Grip The Steering Wheel
- The 10-2 position keeps the kart under control.
- It helps with faster direction changes by raising the center of mass.
- It allows smoother weight transfer to the steering.
- Use a middle grip, adjusting hand position as needed.
- Hold the wheel with 50% pressure for better control.
Body Posture
- Push back into the seat, palm pressing into the wheel.
- Always push the wheel when turning to keep weight back.
How To Drive With My Shoulders
- Hold the wheel high, palm pushing toward it.
- Start the turn with shoulders, using core strength.
- Keep back planted and avoid adjusting the seat.
- Maintain stable posture and keep head still for consistent weight distribution.
Body Posture During Wet Race But On Slicks
- Lean back to keep weight on the tires.
- Lean forward and outside to lift the inside rear tire.
- Lean back to accelerate out of the turn.
Top Tips
Use the steering wheel as little as possible. Hold it high to maintain better control of the kart. Experiment with grip and posture to find the optimal balance for handling.
Chapter 7 - Driving With Flair Vs On Rails
How To Drive A Kart With Limited Sliding Aggressive Flair Style
- Start with trail braking to initiate and control the slide.
- Sliding before the apex is fine, but after wastes time.
- Limit the slide, keeping steering straight or slightly toward opposite lock.
On Rails Driving
- Turn into the apex without sliding.
- Use a stable braking approach.
- Steer with the smallest inputs.
- Exit the corner at the limit with minimal effort.
Top Tips
Choose a style that aligns with my racing attitude. Since modern karts donât allow much sliding, blend different styles to create my own unique approach.
Chapter 8 - Copying The Best Lines And Improving Your Own
- Copy the best driversâ line, but understand why they choose it.
Reason To Switch To Late Apex
- A late apex provides a faster, straighter exit with less engine resistance.
- Switch to a late apex if experiencing exit understeer, as itâs more costly than entry understeer.
- For exit oversteer, a late apex offers more stability, especially in wet conditions.
Reason Why Drivers Tend To Apex Early
- They brake too softly or too late.
- Fear of missing the apex leads to early apexes, which are easier to spot and feel safer in survival mode.
How To Build The Late Apex Habit
- Be fit, as karting is demanding.
- Build self-confidence and plan each corner.
Top Tips
Watch the fastest drivers for track tips and listen to the engine to identify the exit line.
Chapter 9 - Loading â Taking Smoothness To A Whole New Level
- Understanding loading gives drivers an advantage.
- Load the right tires for grip.
- Loading reduces steering and boosts cornering speed.
My Kart Frame Loads Up Same Like The Bow
- When turning, tire load transfers to the chassis.
- Smooth load transfer prevents jerking, keeps control, and avoids slides or corrections.
How To Control Cart Loading
- Steer carefully with minimal adjustments, like gradually bending a bow.
- Hold the steering steady mid-corner for maximum grip and torsion.
- Unload the kart smoothly as you exit and accelerate.
Biggest Loading Fails That Kills Exit Speed
- Turning in too hard:
⢠Builds load quickly, providing full grip but oversteers into the apex.
â˘Drivers often need to steer away from the apex, reducing load on the tires and chassis.
⢠This loses speed, requiring load to be built again. - Not building load smoothly:
⢠Gradual load buildup requires smooth steering input. - Letting the cart slide (especially rear):
⢠Sliding reduces load on the chassis, losing grip and speed.
How To Improve Loading
- Leave a gap to the track edge.
- Use the gap to your advantage.
- Take up the slack gradually.
- Keep the kart in a slight curve until the turning point.
- Turn in with a responsive kart.
- In heavy braking zones, embrace the slide.

Chicanes And S Bends
- At point 1, the driver holds the line for a faster exit.
- At point 2, the transition begins.
- Tire loading shifts, smoothly slackening the chassis.
- The kart boosts confidence, enabling early power.
- Tires are fully loaded, providing max grip for a fast exit.

Turning 2 Corners Into 1
- Keep the kart turning and steering active to avoid relaxing in small straights.

Special Case

Master Inside Rear Tire Lift While Loading
- Lifting the rear inside tire prevents the straight axle from forcing the kart straight.
- It only needs to be unloaded, not visible.
- Gradually lower the tire to avoid rebounding, which slows exits.
How To Lift The Rear Inside Tire
- Visualize the tire lifting to aid the process.
- Avoid lifting too fast to prevent rebounding.
- Maintain constant tire height through the corner to prevent early slamming.
- Imagine the inside tire slowly placing down on exit.
- Develop feel for this to improve kart setup and feedback.
Using Kerb To My Advantage
- Choose the best attack angle for a clean hit.
- Use the curb for shortcuts and gains.
- Unload the tire hitting the curb for smooth lifting.
- Keep the steering steady and let the chassis absorb impact.

Top Tips
Developing a sense of kart loading will embed the reaction into my nerves, making it automatic.
Chapter 10 - Wet Driving â Extreme Lines And Smashing Kerbs
- Being fast in the wet is about embracing uncertainty and adapting confidently.
The Wet Line Rule
- Stay off the rubber; brake on grippier, porous areas.
- The track evolves and changes constantly.
- Exit speed is key; aim for as many straight-line exits as possible.
Gaining Advantage By Smashing Kerbs In The Wets
- Use the kerb to straighten the corner and increase speed.
How To Smash The Kerbs
- Off throttle for wet kerbs.
- Too little kerb is dangerous.
- Keep my body steady.
- Be ready for scraping, grinding, and distressing noises.
- Watch others on the kerb first to avoid crashes or damage.

Mastering Hairpin In The Wet
- Brake off the dry, rubbery line.
- Swing to the outer side of the track.
- Turn in at the latest possible point.
- Aim for a super late apex.
- Exit the hairpin as straight as possible.

Wet Chicanes Technique
- Brake on the inside of the track.
- Turn the kart and aim for the curb.
- Soft braking to the correct speed.
- Brace and hold the kart steady, ignoring uncomfortable noise.
- Drop off the kerb and position to the far left/right.
- Aim for a straight exit line at the second chicane.
- Be cautious with power on exit to avoid sliding and wheel spin.
Steering Technique In The Wet
- Force the kart to cooperate with snappy steering and wide lines.
- Steer quickly to almost maximum lock after braking; gradual steering makes the kart to resists to turning.
- The kart will understeer slightly, but as it slows, it lifts the inside rear wheel and turns sharply.
- Straighten the wheel and drive out of the exit.

Braking Technique In The Wet - Hard Braking
- Brake off the rubber.
- Move off the regular racing line earlier, driving defensively.
- Brake earlier than on the dry line.
- Brake just hard enough to induce lockup, pointing toward the outside and avoiding the rubber line.
- Gradually release the brake toward the end of the braking zone, crossing the dry line.
- The kart will now head for a wide line with a late turn-in point.
Braking Technique In The Wet - Soft Braking
- Get used to hard braking to feel the kartâs limit.
- Then brake softly to make it work.
- Soft braking helps experiment with braking on the dry line.
Top Tips
- Relaxing in the wet helps improve speed.
- Eliminate wheel spin when driving in the wet.
- Watch other drivers to learn their wet racing lines.
Chapter 11 - Looking Ahead - Using Your Eyes Like Locking Missiles
What Happens When You Look Short Distance
- Slow exits due to late throttle input.
- Frequently caught in accidents.
- Apex fixation limits cornering speed.
- Misses apexes due to over-reliance on turn-in and braking.
- Fails to prepare kart (loading, sliding control, minimal steering).
- Struggles with bold overtakes.
Looking Ahead
- Find racing markers (braking, turn-in, apex, exit).
- Spot them early to focus and commit.
- Lock in like a guided missile.
Looking Ahead - Dot To Dot
- Spot the apex early; braking follows instinctively.
- Keep eyes on the apex while braking and turning.
- Shift focus to exit before reaching the apex.
- Trust peripheral vision for apex, prioritize exit.
- Visualize hidden apex for precise control.

Looking Ahead - Floating Focus
- Always look one step ahead, keeping focus moving like a rally driver.
- Focus on a point down the road, like listening to a co-driver.
- Initially exhausting but becomes easier with practice.
Top Tips
Looking ahead helps achieve a flow state, triggering mastery and allowing the body and mind to sync automatically.
Chapter 12 - Practice Days â Data And Practise That Get Results
- Use playtime to relax in the kart.
- Practice with purposeâtreat every run as an experiment.
- Turn doubts into questions for improvement.
- Build self-reliance, confidence, and motivation.
How To Make Practice Works
- Sketch the racing line on an A4 sheet, marking braking points, apex, turn-in, loading, and vision focus.
- Add notes and question marks on uncertain areas like braking and apex points.
- Test different approachesâ5 laps early apex, 5 laps late apexâto compare effectiveness.

How To Do Proper Track Walking
- Reverse engineer the corner during a track walk.
- Identify the apex and find the late apex.
- Walk to the late apex, then step back 3m and crouch to see its perspective.
- Stand up and locate the ideal turn-in point.
- Walk to the turn-in point, crouch again, and visualize the apex.
- Crouching mimics kart height for accuracy.
- Identify braking markers along the way.
How To Determine You Are Fit To Handle The Steering Wheel
- Drive with one arm to understand body movement and kart response.
- Use only the right hand in a right turn and observe body shift.
- Notice how pulling the wheel down affects the kart.
- Repeat with the left hand and compare responses.
- Experiment with different hand positions (high, middle, low) for control feel.
How To Use Data Logging After Race
- Use mychron5 or unigo6005 to log data.
- Compare two laps (same or different drivers).
- Identify where time is gained or lost.
- Analyze braking, apex speed, and exit speed.
- Use GPS/speed charts to adjust braking points and intensity.
- Negative time lost means faster during particular section

Late Or Early Braking
- If the grey line brakes earlier and the delta graph shows a positive time delta, it indicates braking earlier is slower and braking later is faster.
- Braking later means less time spent slowing down, resulting in a faster overall lap time.

Braking Hard Or Soft
- The RPM trace shows the black line dropping rapidly, indicating hard braking with potential lock-up, while the grey line shows a smoother, more gradual braking approach.
- When unlocking the brake, the black line rises sharply, followed by softer braking as you enter the corner.
- If the delta time is negative during hard braking (black line), it indicates that hard braking is more effective and results in a faster lap time.

Apex Speed
- Speed graphâs lowest point shows minimum apex speed; aim to carry more speed through the corner (black graph).
- Analyze the section before the apex to understand what makes the kart faster or slower.

Exit Speed
- Speed graph: The grey line rises below the black line, with the black line showing faster exit speed.
- Getting on power earlier and hitting a late apex improves exit speed.
- Braking too soft or too late negatively impacts exit speed.
Figuring Best Laptimes
- Combine several fast laps to identify the best parts, often resulting in a 0.300 sec improvement.
- Itâs better to compare with my own performance than with the fastest driver, as this helps maintain a positive attitude and motivation. Focus on improving my own pace.
Top Tips
Practice is all about eliminating doubt.
